Here is what happens. You walk the beds, make a rough guess, and order what feels right. Then you run short on the back corner. Or you end up with three yards sitting in the driveway that nobody wants. Both mistakes cost money and time.

The problem is not that people are bad at math. The problem is that mulch math is sneaky. A two-inch depth and a three-inch depth on the same bed are not close to the same order. They are 50 percent apart. A circle bed looks smaller than it is. An L-shaped bed trips people up every time. And irregular beds with curves and corners? Most people just wing it and hope.

How to Calculate Mulch: The Basics

Mulch volume is a three-step calculation. First, find the area in square feet. Second, convert your desired depth to feet. Third, multiply them together to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.

The formula is: Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft) ÷ 27 = Cubic yards

A 200 square foot bed at 3 inches deep needs 200 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet, which is 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards. Round up to 2 yards and add a small waste factor for good measure.

How Mulch Depth Changes the Order

Depth is the biggest variable most people underestimate. The difference between 2 inches and 3 inches is not small. It is 50 percent more mulch on the same area. Here is a quick reference for a 500 square foot bed:

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. The number of bags depends on the bag size:

Bulk Versus Bagged Mulch

Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard and delivered by truck. Bagged mulch is sold at garden centers and home improvement stores. Neither is always cheaper. The answer depends on your project size, local pricing, and delivery charges.

For small projects under 2 cubic yards, bags are often more practical even if the price per yard is higher. You avoid a delivery minimum, you can buy exactly what you need, and you can transport it yourself. For larger projects, bulk usually wins on price per yard, but only after you account for the delivery charge and any minimum order requirement.

How to Measure Irregular Flower Beds

Most beds are not perfect rectangles. Here are the practical approaches:

L-shaped beds: Split the L into two rectangles. Measure each section separately and add the areas together. The calculator does this automatically in the L-shaped bed option.

Curved beds: Measure the length along the outer edge and estimate the average width. Multiply them together. For a curved bed that is roughly 30 feet long and averages 4 feet wide, use 120 square feet. Add a small waste factor to cover the estimate.

Circular beds: Measure the diameter of the circle. Divide by 2 to get the radius. Use the formula: Area = 3.14159 × radius × radius. A 10-foot diameter circle has a 5-foot radius and covers about 78.5 square feet. The calculator handles this automatically when you select the circle shape.

How Landscapers Price Mulch Installation

Contractors price mulch jobs by adding up every real cost and then applying a markup or margin to cover profit. The costs that get missed most often are travel time, supplier pickup time, labor burden, and overhead.

Labor burden is the additional cost on top of wages. Payroll taxes, workers compensation, benefits, and paid time off all add to the true cost of an employee. A worker earning $18 per hour may actually cost $22 to $26 per hour once burden is included.

Overhead is the cost of running the business between jobs. Insurance, phones, advertising, software, vehicle payments, storage, and accounting all have to be covered somewhere. Many contractors allocate overhead as a percentage of direct job cost or a dollar amount per crew hour.

Markup Versus Profit Margin

These are not the same number, and confusing them is one of the most common pricing mistakes in the trades.

Markup is calculated on cost. A 40% markup on a $500 job cost gives a selling price of $700. The profit is $200.

Margin is calculated on revenue. A 40% margin target on a $500 job cost gives a selling price of $833. The profit is $333.

If you tell yourself you want a 40% margin but use the markup formula, you will underprice every job. The calculator uses the correct formula for each method and shows you both the true markup and the true margin after the calculation.

The amount depends on three things: the total square footage of your beds, the depth you want to apply, and whether you are topping off existing mulch or starting fresh. Measure the length and width of each bed, multiply them together, then multiply by the depth in feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards.

A 200 square foot bed at 2 inches deep needs about 1.2 cubic yards. The same bed at 3 inches needs about 1.9 cubic yards. That is a big difference from one inch of depth. Add 5 to 10 percent for waste and settling.

Example: A bed that is 15 feet long and 8 feet wide at 3 inches deep. Area = 15 × 8 = 120 square feet. Depth in feet = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25. Volume = 120 × 0.25 = 30 cubic feet. Cubic yards = 30 ÷ 27 = 1.11 cubic yards.

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A 2 cubic foot bag covers exactly 2 cubic feet. So you need 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5 bags per cubic yard. Since you cannot buy half a bag, you need 14 bags to cover one full cubic yard.

This is why bulk mulch often looks cheaper per yard when you do the math. Fourteen bags at $5.49 each comes to $76.86 per yard before delivery. A bulk yard from a local supplier might cost $35 to $55 per yard depending on your area, but you have to add the delivery charge.

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A 3 cubic foot bag covers 3 cubic feet. So 27 ÷ 3 = exactly 9 bags per cubic yard. This is a clean number, which makes 3 cubic foot bags easy to work with when you are ordering by the yard.

Three cubic foot bags are common at big box stores and garden centers. They are heavier and harder to carry than 2 cubic foot bags, but you need fewer of them. If you are buying a large quantity, the 3 cubic foot bags can save trips to the store.

It depends on the depth. For 1,000 square feet at 2 inches deep: 1,000 × (2/12) = 166.7 cubic feet = 6.17 cubic yards. At 3 inches: 1,000 × 0.25 = 250 cubic feet = 9.26 cubic yards. At 4 inches: 333 cubic feet = 12.35 cubic yards.

Add 5 to 10 percent for waste and settling. So for 1,000 square feet at 3 inches with a 5 percent waste factor, you need about 9.72 cubic yards. Order 10 yards to be safe.

In bags: 9.26 cubic yards at 3 inches = 250 cubic feet. Using 2 cubic foot bags, that is 125 bags. Using 3 cubic foot bags, that is 84 bags. Use the calculator to get exact numbers for your chosen depth and bag size.

There is no single right answer for every bed. The correct depth depends on your existing mulch, weed pressure, plant type, soil drainage, and what you are trying to accomplish.

A common starting point for weed suppression in an established bed is 2 to 3 inches of total mulch depth. If you already have an inch of old mulch, you may only need to add another inch or two. If you are starting on bare soil with heavy weed pressure, 3 to 4 inches gives better coverage.

Too much mulch can cause problems. More than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots, hold excess moisture, and create a habitat for pests. Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks. The calculator lets you set any depth so you can match your specific situation rather than using a generic number.

Two inches can work well for a refresh on an established bed that already has some mulch underneath. It helps with moisture retention and gives the beds a clean look. For weed suppression on bare soil, 2 inches is often not enough on its own. Weed seeds can still germinate through a thin layer.

If you are topping off a bed that already has 1 to 2 inches of settled mulch, adding 2 more inches brings the total to 3 to 4 inches, which is a solid depth. If you are starting fresh, consider 3 inches as a minimum for reasonable weed control.

Four inches is on the high end but not necessarily wrong. It depends on the situation. In a large open bed with no plants, 4 inches provides excellent weed suppression. Around established shrubs and perennials, 4 inches can be too much if it presses against the crowns of plants or holds excessive moisture near roots.

The bigger problem is when people add 4 inches on top of existing mulch without removing the old layer. That can push the total depth to 6 or 8 inches, which can suffocate roots and create drainage problems. If you are refreshing an existing bed, measure the current depth first and subtract it from your target depth before calculating how much to add.

Use the calculator to see exactly how much material 4 inches requires versus 3 inches. The difference is significant on large beds.

Break the irregular bed into simpler shapes. Most beds can be divided into rectangles, triangles, or circles. Measure each section separately, calculate the area of each, and add them together.

For a curved bed, measure the longest length and the average width. Multiply them together for a close estimate. If the bed curves inward, your estimate will be slightly high, which is fine. A small waste factor covers the difference.

For an L-shaped bed, split it at the corner into two rectangles. Measure each rectangle separately. The calculator has a dedicated L-shaped bed option with a diagram showing exactly which measurements to enter. For very complex shapes, use the custom section option and enter the total square footage you have measured manually.

Measure the diameter of the circle from one side to the other through the center. Divide by 2 to get the radius. Then use the formula: Area = 3.14159 × radius × radius.

A circle with a 12-foot diameter has a 6-foot radius. Area = 3.14159 × 6 × 6 = 113.1 square feet. At 3 inches deep, that is 113.1 × 0.25 = 28.3 cubic feet = 1.05 cubic yards.

People consistently underestimate circle areas. A 12-foot circle looks smaller than it is. The calculator handles circle math automatically. Just enter the diameter or radius and select your depth. It shows the square footage, cubic feet, cubic yards, and bag counts all at once.

Split the L into two rectangles at the corner. Measure the length and width of each section. Calculate the area of each rectangle and add them together. That is your total square footage.

Example: Section 1 is 20 feet long by 4 feet wide = 80 square feet. Section 2 is 10 feet long by 4 feet wide = 40 square feet. Total = 120 square feet. At 2 inches deep: 120 × (2/12) = 20 cubic feet = 0.74 cubic yards.

A 5 to 10 percent extra is a reasonable buffer for most residential projects. This covers settling after installation, minor measurement errors, uneven ground, and material lost during handling and spreading.

For a very precise measurement of a simple rectangular bed, 5 percent is usually enough. For irregular beds, multiple areas, or beds with slopes and curves, 10 percent is more comfortable. Contractors often use 10 to 15 percent on larger commercial jobs where running short means a second delivery charge.

Yes. Mulch settles as it absorbs moisture, compacts under foot traffic, and begins to break down. The amount of settling depends on the mulch type, moisture levels, and how it was installed.

Shredded wood mulch and bark mulch tend to settle 15 to 25 percent over the first season. Coarser materials like wood chips settle less. Fine-textured mulch can settle more, especially after rain.

This is one reason to add a small waste factor to your order. If you install 3 inches and it settles to 2.5 inches by midsummer, you have not wasted material. You have accounted for normal settling. The waste factor field in the calculator covers this scenario along with measurement errors and handling losses.

Measure every bed before ordering, not after. People often underestimate because they eyeball the beds instead of measuring them. Walk each bed with a tape measure and write down the dimensions.

Add a waste factor of at least 5 percent. Include settling, handling loss, and minor measurement errors in that number. If you are ordering bulk mulch, check the supplier’s minimum order. You may need to order more than your calculation to meet the minimum, which is fine.

The most common cause of over-ordering is not measuring the beds and just guessing. The second most common cause is not accounting for existing mulch. If you have 2 inches of old mulch in the bed and you order for a fresh 3-inch installation, you will end up with 5 inches total, which is too much.

Measure the existing mulch depth before ordering. Subtract it from your target depth. Only order what you actually need to add, not the full target depth.

Also check the waste factor. A 10 or 15 percent waste factor on a large project adds up quickly. For a well-measured simple bed, 5 percent is enough. Use the calculator to see exactly how much the waste factor adds to your order before you commit to a number.

If bagged mulch at your local store costs $5.49 per 2 cubic foot bag, that works out to about $74 per yard. In that case, bulk might still be cheaper even with the delivery charge.

Convert everything to a cost per cubic yard so you are comparing the same unit. For bags: multiply the bag price by 13.5 for 2 cubic foot bags (or 9 for 3 cubic foot bags) to get the cost per yard before delivery. Add any delivery or pallet charges.

For bulk: take the price per yard and add the delivery charge divided by the number of yards you are ordering. That gives you the effective cost per yard including delivery.

Bulk mulch prices vary widely by region, mulch type, and supplier. Basic wood chip mulch tends to be less expensive than dyed mulch, cedar, or premium bark. Prices also change seasonally, with spring typically being the busiest and sometimes the most expensive time to buy.

The only reliable way to know the current price is to call your local suppliers and get a quote. Prices from one town to the next can be very different. Online price estimates are often outdated or based on national averages that do not reflect your local market.

Delivery charges vary by supplier, distance, and region. A flat delivery fee for a standard load within a local service area can range from $40 to $100 or more. Some suppliers charge by the mile for deliveries outside their normal area. Others include delivery in the price per yard for orders above a certain size.

Always ask about the delivery charge before you commit to a supplier. A supplier with a lower price per yard but a higher delivery charge may end up costing more than a supplier with a higher price per yard and free delivery on large orders.

It depends on the truck. A small dump truck typically carries 5 to 8 cubic yards. A standard single-axle dump truck carries 10 to 12 yards. A tandem-axle dump truck can carry 14 to 18 yards. Some suppliers use larger tri-axle trucks that carry 20 yards or more.

The truck capacity matters for two reasons. First, if your project needs more than one truckload, you pay multiple delivery charges. Second, if the supplier has a minimum order that fills one truck, you may be paying for more mulch than you need.

The number of bags per pallet depends on the bag size and the supplier. A standard pallet of 2 cubic foot bags typically holds 60 to 70 bags. A pallet of 3 cubic foot bags typically holds 40 to 50 bags. Some suppliers stack bags differently, so the count can vary.

If you are ordering a large quantity, ask the supplier how many bags are on a pallet. Buying by the pallet is sometimes cheaper per bag than buying individual bags, and some suppliers offer free delivery on full pallet orders.
