This calculator provides a planning estimate. Soil weight, supplier prices, delivery fees, labor rates, and finished depths vary by location and project.

Homeowner Mode uses editable national planning assumptions. Local supplier and contractor prices may be different.

1 Project Areas

For an irregular area, divide it into smaller rectangles, circles, or triangles. Add each section separately and the calculator will combine the totals.

2Soil Material & Purchase Method

Processed to remove larger rocks, roots, and debris. Suitable for lawns, gardens, and general landscaping.

Soil weight changes with moisture, composition, screening, and compaction. Confirm weight limits with your supplier and delivery company.
3Waste, Settlement & Compaction

Extra material for uneven spreading, handling loss, and measurement differences. Typical range: 5–15%.

Extra loose material for soil that may settle or compact after placement. Typical range: 5–10%.

Waste and settlement/compaction are applied separately. The calculator will not count the same adjustment twice.
4Delivery

Typical range: $50–$150 per trip.

Standard dump trucks carry 10–15 cubic yards.

Miles included in base fee before extra-mile charge applies.

Applied when order is below minimum delivery quantity.

Fee per extra truckload beyond the first.

Delivery trucks need a safe dumping location. Soft ground, narrow gates, overhead wires, steep driveways, and restricted access may prevent the driver from placing soil where you want it.
5Labor & Site Conditions

National planning range: $15–$30/yd for manual spreading.

Rough grading: $0.08–$0.50/sq ft. Finish grading: $0.50–$2.00/sq ft.

Contractor Labor Method

6Additional Contractor Costs

Skid-steer, mini loader, wheelbarrows, etc.

Applied to total direct costs. Typical range: 10–20%.

Buffer for unknowns. Typical range: 5–10%.

7Contractor Pricing & Profit
Markup adds a percentage to cost. Gross margin measures profit as a percentage of the selling price. They are not the same calculation.

Selling Price = Break-Even Cost x (1 + Markup%)

If the calculated selling price falls below this amount, the minimum will be applied and shown separately.

8Material Pricing (Editable Defaults)

All inputs are editable. Update any value and click the button again to recalculate.
